Application of mustard greens easily using the hydroponic method, it is very easy to apply now without having to have a large yard.
This method is easier and faster than using conventional methods which often require a large yard.
This hydroponic method involves the use of water mixed with a nutrient solution as a substitute for soil media for the growth of mustard greens.
As a result, mustard greens using hydroponic methods tend to grow faster, are healthier, and can be harvested sooner too.
* The following are the steps in planting mustard greens using the hydroponic method.
1. PREPARATION OF PLANTING MEDIA AND NUTRIENTS
- prepare a hydroponic container, such as a used bottle or NFT system (nutrient system technique)
- Provide planting media, such as rockwool, cocopeat or you can also use burnt rice husks.
- prepare a balanced hydroponic nutrient solution (AB Mix)
2. NURSERY
- sow mustard seeds that have been sown into rockwool media that has been moistened using water mixed with a nutrient solution
- Maintain the humidity of the seedling medium and avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
- Move the mustard green seedlings into the hydroponic system after they have 2 - 3 true leaves (around 1 - 14 days or 1 week old).
3. TRANFERS AND MAINTENANCE
- Carefully transfer the mustard greens to the hydroponic container.
- make sure the roots of the sprouts are submerged in the nutrient solution.
- monitor PH & EC (electrical conductivity)
- provide sunlight every day (around 2 - 4 hours every day).
- Check and refill the nutrient solution regularly.
- carry out regular pest and disease monitoring.
4. HARVEST
- Mustard green plants grown using hydroponic methods can generally be harvested within 20-60 days after planting.
- harvesting by picking or cutting the mustard greens stems
- Some varieties of mustard greens can be harvested by pulling out the entire plant.
* Benefits of growing mustard greens using hydroponic methods :
1. FASTER GROWTH
- Mustard green plants using hydroponic methods can grow faster, this is because the plant roots can directly absorb nutrients dissolved in water.
2. BETTER QUALITY
- The harvest of mustard greens using a hydroponic system tends to be healthier, cleaner and more likely to be pest-free.
3. LANDS EFFICIENCY
- Planting mustard greens using a hydroponic system can be done on limited land or even in urban areas.
4. WATER USE
- The hydroponic system for growing mustard greens can save water usage, because the nutrient solution is mixed in the water and can be recycled.
5. FASTER HARVEST TIME
- The harvest period using the hydroponic mustard green system is faster than using the conventional system.
