Now days, growing tomatoes can be done anywhere, especially for those who don't have a large yard.
This time we will provide a brief review regarding the application of tomato plants using used gallon media.
Planting tomato plants using used gallon containers is a creative and environmentally friendly method, because we are utilizing used items that are no longer used.
* Here are the steps for applying tomato plants to used gallons.
1. PREPARATION OF USED GALLON MEDIA
- Cut the top of the gallon, about 1/3 of the top will be used later to plant the tomato plants.
- Make several holes at the bottom of the gallon to allow water to seep in so that the tomato plant roots are not too damp, as this can cause root rot.
2. GROWING MEDIA
- Mix the planting medium that is not too porous, such as soil, sand, or compost or dry leaves in a ratio of 3:1:1 to suit the used gallon media.
- Fill the gallon using the planting medium that was previously mixed into the used gallon up to the height limit, approximately so that we can plant the tomato seeds or plants.
3. PLANTING
- Tomato seeds: use tomato seeds that we have sown for about 20-30 days or when the first leaves are visible.
- Making a planting hole: make a planting hole deep enough to place the tomato seedlings, then cover it back up with soil.
4. MAINTENANCE
- Watering: Water regularly after first planting the seeds, then adjust according to the weather conditions and humidity of the planting medium.
- fertilization : Provide compost or manure at the start of planting, then provide additional fertilizers such as organic or non-organic fertilizers periodically.
* PEST & DISEASE CONTROL
- Monitor tomato plants regularly, if there are signs such as weeds or other pests by pruning the leaves and stems affected by the pests, if necessary we can also spray pesticide liquid according to the dosage.
- Provide support for the tomato plant when it enters the fruiting period, with the aim of supporting the stem of the plant and the tomato, we can use bamboo as a support.
* ADDITIONAL TIPS
Air circulation :
Place tomato plants in a location with good air circulation and provide space between each gallon jug.
Lighting :
Tomato plants require adequate lighting, so ensure they receive 4-6 hours of sunlight each day.
Pruning :
Prune unproductive or wilted leaves and stems to stimulate fruit growth.
- By following the steps as we have explained above, you can be sure that you can apply tomato plants to used gallon media and get satisfactory harvest results.
